Let others inspire you to go further

There is great joy in Émilie Fournier’s voice when she talks about boccia, the sport she has been practicing for about six years. It is because the athlete devotes a lot of energy to her passion and dreams of reaching the highest summits.

It all started in 2003 at Madeleine-Bergeron school, in Sainte-Foy. That is when the girl from Lévis made her debut in a sport that would bring her many great experiences.

Émilie practices boccia seriously since 2005 under the supervision of her father Alain who is also her coach. He has been a great help to me and I improved. Already this year, I train even more and I love it.

Since 2006, the Défi sportif is one of the events on her schedule, even if she had to skip last year since she was moving into her first apartment.

It is a major competition where I get to know many people better. Each year, it is like a dream for me to be part of it, she points out about the important meeting.

Even if she would like to, someday, cross swords with the best on the planet, the 22-year old athlete is realistic, reminding herself, like François Bourbonnière, that boccia remains a game. I just want to go as far as possible in my sport and improve as much as I can.

Like most people, Émilie is filled with admiration for some people, sort of role models. They inspire me to a great extent in my sport.

As a direct result of the advice and tips from some of them, her main deficiency works less and less against her. I had trouble concentrating when I started boccia and I have improved a good deal on that weakness.

I also learn many things about my sport when I go to competitions because I love watching others playing boccia.

Martin Pichette, a former member of the national team, is one who somewhat assumes the role of mentor with the Saint-Apollinaire athlete. The first time I took part in an event, he told me: ‘Go, you can do it.’ That gave me confidence.

One day, he told me: ‘I went far, but you will be able to get even further.’ His words of encouragement help me outdo myself and not give up, in spite of my disability.

The Défi sportif is organised by AlterGo.
