Wheelchair racers use a lightweight, 3-wheel chair that features an extended, aerodynamic design. This type of racing wheelchair is formed to fit the shape of the athlete, with men reaching a maximum speed of 30 km/h and women pushing 25 km/h. Some 30 Quebec-based athletes are ranked in their respective disability categories. At the Défi sportif, competition is offered in 5 categories: Paraplegic class (women’s and men’s); Quadriplegic class (women’s and men’s); Junior mixed (17 years and under). Sunday’s wheelchair road race is run over a 10-kilometre course (4 laps x 2.5 km). For our Paralympic-level athletes, this race marks the first outdoor competition of the year held in Canada. Track and field competitions governed by Special Olympics Québec is exclusively practised by athletes with an intellectual disability. During the Défi sportif, a slew of track and field competitions will be presented: throws, tosses, jumps, races and relay races will show the talents and prowesses of all.

Transportation :

Once again this year, athletes and accompanists can use a free of charge shuttle service during the event, courtesy of STM (Société de Transport de Montréal), the official carrier of the Défi sportif. Further more, athletes arriving from out-of-town can request transportation from the airport, train or bus station to their hotel.
