Défi sportif 2009, presented by Hydro Québec : choose to win.

Sports

Basketball

Description

Wheelchair basketball is essentially the same as the traditional game. It is played on the same court as traditional basketball, with two teams of five players opposing each other, and uses the same rules, but with one notable exception: the “dribbling” has been adapted. A wheelchair basketball player can only make two wheel-turning motions per dribble when in possession of the ball. Each player is rated according to a points system, ranging from 1.0 to 4.5, based on his or her physical capabilities, with 4.5 players considered the most able in terms of movement. In terms of the players' level of disability, the point total of the five players on a team cannot exceed 15. In Canada, the game is popular even among people who have no specific disability, and to keep a level playing field when mixing in with players with a disability, the rules state that participants may not get up from their chair or place their feet down on the court during a game.
