From August 20–25, 2018, nearly 20 police officers, cyclists and volunteers will travel about 1,100 kilometres across Quebec for the 22nd edition of SPVM Police Officers’ Bike Tour, in order to raise funds for Défi sportif AlterGo’s young athletes with functional limitations. The pack will depart from Montreal and make successive stops at Venise-en-Québec, Lennoxville, Thetford Mines, Charny, Shawinigan, and Longueuil.
For the fifth consecutive year, participating police officers have committed to donating the profits from the Bike Tour to the youth section of Défi sportif AlterGo. On the 2017 edition, they raised about 33,000$. The funds were used to cover the transportation costs of the centres and schools that participated in Défi sportif AlterGo’s 35th edition that took place from April 23-29, 2018.
As a result, the 35th edition hosted more than 6,000 athletes with functional limitations from all over Quebec. “We are committed to the promotion of a healthy lifestyle for these young people. We are glad to be able to help them thrive through the practice of sports and participate in the sports events they are passionate about. Having the opportunity of being both the agents and witnesses of their happiness makes us very proud,” explains Andy Frechette, SPVM sergeant who has been taking part in the Bike Tour for 12 years.
Maxime Gagnon, Director of Défi sportif AlterGo, who will also be among the cyclists, is enthusiastic about this partnership. “The collaboration between Défi sportif AlterGo and the SPVM Police Officers’ Bike Tour is valuable as it goes beyond fundraising. In addition to the Bike Tour, participating police officers give of their time during the Défi sportif AlterGo to encourage our young athletes and award medals. They are a source of motivation for young people,” he stated.
