Accompanied by members of the Défi sportif AlterGo team, nearly 20 officers, cyclists, and volunteers crossed the finish line of the SPVM Police Officers’ Bike Tour last Saturday in Longueuil. To raise funds for Défi sportif AlterGo’s young athletes with disabilities, these police officers traveled about 1,000 km across Québec via Venise-en-Québec, Lennoxville, Thetford Mines, Charny, Shawinigan, and Longueuil.

The $36,100 raised during this 22nd edition of the SPVM Police Officers’ Bike Tour will allow several youths with functional limitations to participate in Défi sportif AlterGo’s annual multi-sport event, which brings together more than 7,000 elite and up-and-coming athletes with disabilities. Thanks to the SPVM police officers’ contribution, these young people will be able to go beyond their limits during high-calibre sports competitions.

During their journey, SPVM officers had the opportunity to meet young athletes who participate in Défi sportif AlterGo. “It was pleasant talking with these young people. Their passion is a reminder of why we devote so much energy to Défi sportif AlterGo,” commented Pascal Richard, an SPVM police inspector who has been taking part in the Bike Tour for more than 12 years.

Maxime Gagnon, director of Défi sportif AlterGo, biked alongside police officers for a third consecutive year. “For the past 5 years, Montreal police officers have been working with Défi sportif AlterGo to encourage young people to adopt a healthy lifestyle through the practice of sports. It’s a rewarding collaboration. They are a source of encouragement for young people,” declared Maxime Gagnon with enthusiasm and gratitude.

In addition to the Bike Tour, a raffle was organized to raise funds for Défi sportif AlterGo’s young athletes. The draw will take place at AlterGo’s offices on August 27, 2018, at 1 pm and the winners will be announced on Défi sportif AlterGo’s Facebook page.

In a similar vein, SPVM police officers were featured in a couple of episodes of the show Des Squelettes dans le placard hosted by Patrice L’Écuyer, to raise more funds for the youth of Défi sportif AlterGo. The episodes will air on the week of September 3rd. To watch the episodes, visit the show’s website.
